The IEC 60870-5-104 protocol is applied in telemetry devices/systems. Data is transferred as sequences of binary codes in order to monitor and control geographically-distributed processes.

The protocol standard is defined to operate with TCP/IP open interface, which is used in LAN orWAN Networks. This protocol is widely used for Load Dispatch Center communication in Hydel or Thermal Power Plants.

IEC 60870-5-104 is an industry protocol mainly used in the Energy and Oil & Gas industries. The MasterOPC Universal Modbus OPC Server supports IEC104 Server mode. This mode allows for an OPC server adapter from Modbus to IEC104 protocol while supporting other interfaces (OPC DA, UA, ODBC and MQTT).
